Wilmington Friends Meeting

Quakers are Friends

WORSHIP GOALS

  1. To provide a worship setting with opportunities for developing an experiential relationship with the living Christ; experiencing his presence rather than simply following rituals, becoming “acquainted with” and “committed to” Jesus Christ rather than having mere “knowledge about” Him.
  1. To challenge our members to “let their lives speak” of the distinctiveness of the Disciples of Christ.
  1. To be a Meeting where both programmed (sermons, music) and unprogrammed (silence) worship can be experienced for the benefit of all who attend.
  1. To demonstrate a distinctive Quaker understanding of how humans relate to a living God.
  1. To promote an understanding that Christian and minister are synonymous terms. We all have responsibilities in ministry.

Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

---Matthew 18:20

“Hence worship --- rightly understood and practiced --- shapes and reorients our desires. In gathering together in the presence of the God who created us, we listen again to the grand story of “God with us,” a story that both frees us from the necessity of spinning our own stories with ourselves at the center and frees us to locate our lives afresh within God’s story. In so gathering we do our best to quiet the voices of our own agendas, our own desires, our own strivings --- in order to hear afresh what God desires.”
